Artist-in-residence: GARETH PHILLIPS

An award-winning photographer of long-form documentary work, Gareth’s projects are deeply personal. Based between the UK and India, Gareth uses the natural geography of forests and cascading mountain sides as metaphors for the tension and relationship between wild landscapes and the people that find succour in such remoteness.

Pictured above is a maquette of the book that Gareth developed during his residency at Le Space. Unfortunately the accompanying exhibition and workshops were cancelled due to COVID-19, however we hope to stage this work at the gallery at a later date. Gareth is also one of Le Space Gallery’s represented artists and his work is available for viewing and purchase upon request.

Gareth is an artist and photographer regularly commissioned by the Guardian, The Sunday Times Magazine, FT Weekend Magazine and the Wall Street Journal. Gareth’s work has been internationally recognised in exhibitions and awards, most notably the Ian Parry Award, Welsh Livery Society Award for Photographic Excel- lence. His work is also part of the David Hurn Collection at the National Museum Wales.

DESIGN FILES HOME VISIT: YING ANG & MICHAEL CHAZAN

"If you told a younger Michael Chazan he’d raise his future family in an off-the-plan CBD apartment, he probably wouldn’t believe you… but funnily enough, it’s now his dream home.

The furniture designer and creative director of Le Space, which he founded with his partner, photographer/curator/educator Ying Ang, live here with their almost-three-year-old son, Oska Shübi, and have found that apartment living is the life for them.

Over the past three years, the couple have placed their own maximalist stamp on the Melbourne apartment, with plenty of personal touches, plants, self-made furniture, and soft lighting. It’s a home that really feels lived in – we love it!" - DF

Exhibition: DAVID SCHULZE

‘HEADS’

The first solo exhibition and book launch of New York based photographer David Schulze.

In this show, Schulze presents 30 intimate portraits from his adopted home, New York. He observes an almost accidental notion of beauty in the endless flow of anonymous human traffic that churns through the city.

Now more than ever, people are conscious and in control of their outward appearance, almost to the point of obsession. However, in this work, Schulze seeks to discover a beauty that is largely unintended and often unseen, particularly by the subject.

In this hidden and yet omnipresent world that sits behind the faces we engage with - or disengage with - on a daily basis, Schulze introduces us to an abstracted set of commonalities that sit in stark contrast to our increasingly divided society.

Exhibition: the Young initiators

Using Collingwood as a playground, Clearing The Shadow presents contemporary imagery from 12 young artists, who have spent the last two months collaborating on topics that connect and disconnect us, using visual stories as a tool to experiment and express.

Holding space for creative energy and critical thought, the artists also pose the question, to themselves, to you, and to wider audiences -
”What knowledge do we need to create socially engaged visual storytelling?”

Answering this question through experimentation, Clearing The Shadow presents snippets of internal landscapes - from political to personal, in the form of photography, poetry and moving image.

The artists:

Lally Tap, Sara Yasir, Yakub Ogunsina, Summaiya Rehman, Lameck Munalula, Peter Savat, Emma Fenech, Kevin Riady, Christopher Phung, Angelo Duot, Ammar Yonis, Akolda Bill

Produced by Madz Rehorek and Emmanuela Piath Noi

DESIGN FILES STUDIO VISIT: SIMONE HAAG & PéPITE

"Behind a grungy warehouse facade in a Collingwood backstreet lies a wonderland of creative studios. Like a cave with a network of twisting artistic tunnels, Le Space is a gallery, a community hub for design studios, and place for creative professionals to cross-pollinate ideas.

Stylist Simone Haag and Irina Rybakov of Pépite perfectly embody this ethos. We recently visited the pair in their beautiful shared space, to see how this shared workspace plays out IRL...

Enter Le Space, a new, sleekly designed creative hub in Collingwood that is as close to an arts commune as it gets in inner city Melbourne. The brainchild of Michael Chazan of Moda Piera and photographer Ying Ang, the space houses a plethora of Melbourne’s elite design professionals in its cocoon." - DF

Utilizing natural and studio lighting, 15 participants and 4 models over the course of 2 days, explored the elements and ideas behind making a compelling portrait.

Guided by our artist-in-residence, David Schulze, and co-founder of Le Space Gallery, Ying Ang, each participant was able to focus on individual elements of their visual practice and spend time working on the character of subject, light, prop, direction and work flow that influences the final outcome of a successful portrait session.

A showcase of each participant and their resultant images can be see on our Instagram account.

Exhibition: Sam Forsyth-gray

New Archivalia explores the unique connection between photography and the archive. It focuses on the unique dynamics of photography’s role as both passive archived material and/or an active and agential means of preserving, cataloguing, documenting and recontextualizing. It seeks to visualise this relationship through a poetic reading of a fictional archive to establish a theoretical and embedded investigation into these virtual and physical spaces.

New Archivalia took the form of moving image, experimental photography and a self-published photobook. The work is the result of Sam’s Master of Arts – photography project undertaken at Photography Studies College, Melbourne. Ultimately, the work considers the archive as an evolving and mutating space for both new personal collections and hierarchical change.

Community Outreach: The Young Initiators

Supporting a local community of emerging creatives has always been a focus of intention at Le Space. We have partnered with The Young Initiators program from the Centre For Multicultural Youth, to mentor and nurture a host of bright and curious talent in learning about visual language. By engaging our physical space, the participants have the opportunity to workshop within the context of public exhibition.

We will also be making the most of our in-house resources, such as the Asia-Pacific Photobook Archive, to engage in conversations about the nuances of publishing.
